Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme
The DofE is all about going the extra mile – gaining new skills, pushing yourself physically, helping others and exploring new territories. At the same time, you’ll gather friendships, experiences and memories that will last a lifetime. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from, as long as you’re 14 to 24, you can choose the activities that motivate you and go on your own personal journey. We know from other participants that the DofE helps you stand out from the crowd when you apply for college, university or jobs.

The Award consists of 4 Sections; Volunteering, Skill, Physical Recreation and Expedition. For Bronze level the Volunteering, Skill and Physical Recreation Sections involve a regular commitment, approximately 1 hour a week, over a 3 calendar month period for two of the Sections, and a 6 calendar month period for the third (as chosen by the student). The Sections do not need to be completed at the same time, and can be staggered throughout the year if more convenient.
Volunteering – to encourage service to individuals and the community
Skills – to encourage the discovery and development of personal interests and social and practical skills
Physical Recreation – to encourage participation and improvement in physical activity
Expeditions – to encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery
The programmes are at three progressive levels which, if successfully completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. To achieve an award, the participant must work on each section for a minimum period of time, and must be monitored and assessed by someone with knowledge of the chosen activities.
Each progressive level demands more time and commitment from participants: Bronze 3–6 months; Silver: 6–9 months; Gold: 12–18 months. Participants are required to show regular activity and commitment to the award for the duration of their DofE programme, which is usually at least one hour per week.
